Interesting quote:

“As revolutionary instruments (when nothing but revolution will cure the evils of the State) [secret societies] are necessary and indispensable, and the right to use them is inalienable by the people.”
~Thomas Jefferson to William Duane, 1803. FE 8:256

There is a lot of talk about secret societies and a lot of endless paranoia in our modern society. But this quote by Jefferson really sums it up to me. Secrecy and ultimately the ability to conduct our associations freely and in private can be an important tool for change. As I read this I find myself agreeing with Jefferson on the principle and right to use a secret society as an important tool of the people.

The right to free assembly is fundamentally important. But it extends far beyond just our ability to show up in a city square and make vocal our will. It also extends to small groups and organizations of like minded people to plot and conspire to change their system of government should it become too repressive. And therefore is an indispensable tool of the people for procuring their freedom and liberty.

In the modern internet age there is an important dimension to this principle that must extend to anonymity on the internet. The ability to hold conversations, make associations, a freely associate with others in private and ultimately in secret should be protected and moreover strengthened if we want to maintain a vibrant democracy and free society.
