John Kerry Gets It
A couple of key quotes from a recent email from John Kerry’s mailing list that I am on.
About why we are in Iraq:
It’s as simple as this. Most members of Congress, myself included, share some responsibility for getting us into Iraq. We’ve got to take responsibility for getting us out.
And about Bush’s attitude:
President Bush wants to stumble along, perpetuating his mistakes for the remainder of his time in office. He’s even suggested that decisions about withdrawing all of our troops from Iraq will be for the next president to make.
And, instead of statesmanship, the president’s top advisor, Karl Rove, is worrying that the war has put voters in a “sour mood” for the 2006 elections. He should be worried about the safety of our troops, not the job security of Republican congressmen.
This is why I like John Kerry. He seems sensible and can learn from past mistakes. There is a lot of gnashing of teeth over who got us into the war and how. To me that is neither here nor there at this point. The more vital question is what are we going to do to get out of it? Kerry would have shown real leadership on this front had he been elected president in 2004. The pundits will blithely say oh John Kerry is just moving to the far left to position himself for a run in 2008. Even if this is the case so what. What matters to me is getting things done now. And Kerry has shown persistence in holding the president to account and trying to gel a genuine force of opposition in the Senate. With respect to the war it is time that we join Kerry and others and remove the responsibility from president Bush’s hands. Bush has demonstrated an abysmal failure to take any real action on Iraq and ensuring progress. Call your senator today and let them know that they should join senator Kerry in the effort to bring our troops home, or else they might find themselves out of a job in 2006 or 2008. The president won’t do the job so it is up to the senate and the congress to get the job done.
Here is the call to action: Tell your senator to support the Senate Joint Resolution 36 to bring our troops home in 2006.
